Home bag collection and check in now available for passengers flying on Swiss

Passengers travelling internationally from Geneva and Zurich airports on Swiss and Edelweiss can wave goodbye to their bags at home and collect them at their destination.

The service, run in partnership with Swiss Rail, must be ordered the day before departure. Each bag costs CHF 22 on top of a base collection fee of CHF 40. Boarding passes are delivered when bags are collected.

Passengers flying with other airlines can use the service too, however they must collect their bags from Swiss Rail at the airport and endure regular check in queues.

Used on the return journey, the service allows passengers to avoid standing at a bag carousel at Zurich or Geneva airports after a long flight. This service must be booked two days before the departure date and requires you to take your luggage to the airport of departure. A customs declaration must be completed and bags must contain no goods bought abroad, including those within duty free allowances.

It is possible to send skis and golf clubs.

NAVIGATING THE WORLD OF POST-TRUTH POLITICS

Democrats Abroad Switzerland in Basel is very excited to welcome Alexandra Cirone, PhD, to speak to us about how to navigate a world of post-truth politics!

What are we to do in a political environment where objective facts are ignored in favor of appeals to emotional or personal beliefs? Where fear trumps fact? Who can we trust in a world where partisanship has become so strong that facts are sacrificed to political expediency and the media has sacrificed truth in favor of balance?

If these questions trouble you, then please join us at Im Lohnhof on Thursday, March 22nd at 7 PM to learn more about how this murky post-truth world works and what we can do to navigate it.

All are welcome, and DA Switzerland asks all American citizens in attendance to donate CHF 15 in support of this event and our voter outreach efforts.

Anyone who would like to extend the discussion may join us for dinner with Dr. Cirone after the talk. (Additional suggested donation: CHF 10) Dinner will be at Restaurant Elsbethenstübli at 9 PM; attendees will pay for their own dinner. (Estimated cost: CHF 40) Space is limited for dinner, so please RSVP ASAP!

About the speaker: Dr. Cirone received her BA in political science from the University of Chicago, MA and M.Phil in political science from Columbia University, and successfully defended her PhD in political science at Columbia University in June 2017. Her focus was Comparative Politics and Qualitative Methods. Prior to pursuing her PhD, she served as Research Manager at Harvard Kennedy School’s Evidence for Policy Design. She served as a pre-doc Research Fellow and is currently serving as a post-doc Research Fellow at the London School of Economics in their Political Economy Group. This fall, she will head back to the United States to be an assistant professor in the Government department at Cornell University. We are thrilled that she can share her experience with us before she departs for the US.

Music festival 23-24 February in St. Gallen

Nordklang is coming to St Gallen!

Nordklang is a small festival in St. Gallen (Switzerland). The festival is a non-profit event, only driven by the passion for Nordic music. Therefore we only offer all the bands their travel, hotel and food expenses be paid. This means there is no fee for playing at Nordklang Festival, but we guarantee a nice stay in St. Gallen, or as the team behind the event says: «A nice treat». So no fee – but still a good possibility to reach a new audience and a great experience. Nordklang has already made a name for themselves as a serious presenter of Nordic music in St. Gallen. First with the «Färöer Connection», which began some years ago – presenting Faroese music – and drama.

However, Nordklang has expanded its scope to also include live concerts featuring bands from all over the Nordic countries thus organizing Nordklang live music event in St. Gallen. The event is based in the beautiful city of St. Gallen. The people of St. Gallen find Nordic music very exotic, and therefore its possible for Nordklang arrange its 12th festival in 2018.

It’s a small festival with various stages (with a capacity of a few hundred), and a number of small scenes (theatre, cafés etc.) in the city. Behind the festival – founded by Felix Van den Berg – is a team, who have a big passion for Nordic music. The festival has over the years presented acts like Efterklang, Blaue Blume, Hafdis Huld, Navneløs, A Kid Hereafter, Amiina, Under Byen, Goodiepal, Reptile Youth, Adna, Rasmus Lyberth, Sekuoia, Hjálmar, Honningbarna, Magenta Skycode, Dad Rocks!, Petur Ben – just to name a few. Special projects come to light as collaborations between musicians from the nordic countries and from Switzerland such as the „Nordklang Sessions“ (a one-week songwriting camp), or Danish Mother Lewinsky playing with a youth orchestra from St. Gallen. In 2015, Get Your Gun performed acousticly with a local men’s choir. No idea is too extraordinary to be realised.

The next festival will be held on 24. February 2018.
