Schwellbrunn hiking path for families (with riddles in German).

In 2017, Schwellbrunn was voted the most beautiful village in Switzerland! What an honour! The small village is not just beautiful, the tourist office has come up with two exciting riddles. A great for hikers with long legs (blue) and a shorter one (green) for families or those who prefer a smaller hike. On the map you can see the different possibilities, it is also a combination of both ways possible.

Stüpfis family trail should be on your hiking list. From St Gallen take the train to Herisau. Here you take the bus through the beautiful Appenzell countryside to the small village of Schwellbrunn. On your way through Schwellbrunn, you can also see why in 2017 it came to the title “the most beautiful village in Switzerland”. The view and the traditional Appenzeller village are unique.

Before you can start the hike, you first have to look for the start-up house with the puzzles on the internet. The sign is or easy to miss or it has none. In any case, it is slightly up the street (from the bus station on the opposite side of the street). The drivers will have it a bit easier, since it is the same with the parking lots.

The start house is both the start and end of the puzzle trails. You decide whether your Hüpfis big puzzle path goes, or just to recommend with families, Stüpfis family puzzle path, which is a lot shorter. The paths can be done in both directions.

Good to know

The paths are NOT suitable for pushchairs.

The paths are designed as circular routes and can be walked on both sides

A little more than 3 hours is needed for a family with small hikers (5.5 and 2.5 years old) (including solving puzzles, excluding big breaks). With a little bigger children it is probably something fixer 😉

Good shoes are an advantage

A large part of the green family path leads through beautiful forests. The hike is therefore also great in hot weather, because you do not run all the time in the sun.

On the green family riddle trail, the fire pit is roughly in the middle, perfect for a leisurely lunch

The bus does not travel often, it is best to study the timetable in advance, also for the return journey.

The riddles are populated with new puzzles every year, so a return is well worth it

The Verkehrsverein Schwellbrunn provides the riddles for free, but is always happy about a small Zusupf (like right over the mailbox at Starthüsli)

5 fun ways to enjoy Swiss National Day

The United States have the Forth of July. The French have Bastille Day on July 14. And the Swiss celebrate their national holiday on August 1.

There are many ways of enjoying this day off, but here is the Newly Swissed selection of unmissable Swiss National Day celebrations:

Farmer’s Brunches

Many prefer to start off their day with a hearty farmer’s brunch. While this tradition has been around for a long time, about 400 farms have created a network in recent years which makes discovering and booking your seats a breeze.

The foods are local and often organic, but all brunch tickets guarantee you an all-you-can-eat experience! Treat your tastebuds to some home cooked pies, smoked sausage, fresh cider, hardboiled eggs, crispy Röschti with bacon or a range of crunchy Müesli cereals and breads…

Apart from free-roaming chickens, most farms will offer some kind of entertainment for the kids. Expect fun games in the haystack, horse carriage rides or petting zoos. For the adults, many farmers offer tours of the premises. And if you are lucky, the tour guide will even speak English! Either way, it is going to be interesting to get a glimpse of how a Swiss farm operates.

Find a participating farm

Cow Riding at Boldernhof

Why not combine a farmer’s brunch with – well – cow riding? It may sound odd, but as we found out last year, this is the ultimate Swiss experience! For only 2 francs a person, you can take a spin on one of Bolderhof’s calm bovines…

This farm is located just outside of Stein am Rhein and is also holding the traditional brunch (reservation required).

Swiss Wrestling “Schwingen” Tournaments

Get up close with the Swiss version of wrestling! Carried out in a ring of sawdust, two Schwinger will attempt to wrestle it out by holding onto each other’s baggy pants and belts. As a token of appreciation, the winner of each Schwingen match will dust off the loser’s back.

List of “Schwingen” Events

Traditional Bonfires

Traditionally, Höhenfeuer served as a way of communication between the different settlements. For one, they would be lit to warn others of approaching danger. Hiking to one of these gigantic bonfires on August 1 is truly an unforgettable experience for the entire family. On hillsides near and far, your eyes will be drawn to many more bonfires from surrounding villages.

For bigger events, check out the events calendar of Switzerland Tourism. However, most every community will light a bonfire – making a detailed schedule pointless!

Firework Displays

If there is one season for fireworks, it is summer! In Switzerland, kids of all ages are looking forward to shooting off fireworks items like fountains, sparklers, rockets, and firecrackers. And to the delight of everyone, some larger towns will light up the sky with magnificent firework displays!

Events:

Flüelen (Seepromenade), July 31

Rhine Falls fireworks display “Fire on the Rocks”, July 31

Stein am Rhein, Aug 1, 10 PM (Editor’s choice: Spend the afternoon swimming in the Rhine river, enjoy dinner in Stein am Rhein and get ready for the fireworks…)

Eschenberg Observatory in Switzerland to open doors for Friday’s total eclipse of the moon (27th July)

The Swiss space observatory in Eschenberg will offer a free, guided tour on Friday night in what is expected to be the longest total eclipse of the moon for the next 100 years.

The eclipse, in which the moon will be completely hidden, is expected to last from 21.30 until 23.14 – 104 minutes.

While the eclipse will obscure the moon “it will still be recognizable in a faint, deep red shimmer,” said the Eschenberg observatory in a statement. These shades of colour are caused by sunbeams filtered from the earth’s atmosphere that effectively provide lighting for the once in a lifetime event.

High fire danger in certain parts of Switzerland

Currently, fire risk is high in central Valais, Ticino, parts of Graubunden and St. Gallen, according to Switzerland’s government.

The warning comes with a call not to light fires outside. Current warnings in these regions are at level 4 out of 5, which means burning matches, flying sparks from barbecue fires and lightning will very probably ignite a fire, which will spread fast.

In Ticino and parts of Graubunden there is a total ban on outdoor fires, and a ban on fires in forest areas across most of the rest of Graubunden.

Air traffic control strike planned in Switzerland- 23rd to 27th July

On Tuesday, the union Skycontrol, presented a plan for a strike in July. Skycontrol represents some workers working for the air traffic control company Skyguide, which operates at airports in Geneva, Sion, Bern, and Lugano.

The strike would run from Monday 23 July until Friday 27 July 2018.

A tweet from Skycontrol sets out the dates and times of the planned strike.

The planned strike is over a collective labour agreement. According to the newspaper Le Temps, workers are demanding 125 days of annual leave and annual pay increases of 1.8% over three years, or extra days leave equivalent to these pay rises.

Skycontrol expects the strike to affect 50 flights a day, with either delays or cancelations. Flights flying through Swiss airspace will be affected too.

Zurich airport should be unaffected.

Speaking to RTS, André Schneider, Geneva airport’s director, said: “we regret that a minority of controllers want to take passengers hostage. They don’t represent the majority of their colleagues who voted for an agreement that appears to meet their expectations.”

Authorities in canton Sankt Gallen are promising to put up signs along lake sides to warn of duck fleas.

Lake swimmers warned of duck fleas

The move comes after a mother posted pictures of her children suffering a very itchy rash.

Duck fleas are the larvae of a parasite that can penetrate skin.

It’s recommended swimmers take a shower after swimming in a lake and then dry yourself vigorously.

The children are recovering and the itching should stop in the next few days.
